Norwegian folk music is an endless source of inspiration, and in "Slåtter på kontrabass" I contextualize the link between folk music and my own music making. The most striking similarities lies in the use of overtones: harmonics on the double bass, and what folk musicians call the nature-tone-scale. Within the project I focus on three main approaches, which often overlap:

1. Transcriptions and arrangements of folk tunes for solo bass, bass ensembles and bass with pre-recorded sound

2. My own compositions based on various material from folk tunes

3. Exploring microtonal tunings of the strings

In 2024 Motvind Records released the first album with Slåtter på kontrabass (link here). Here is music from various traditions, inspired by various performers: Susanne Lundeng, Knut Kjøk, Hans W. Brimi, Geir Egil Larsen, Eilev Smedal, Unni Løvlid, Thorvald Trondsgård, and Vidar Lande stand as sources.

Traditional ballads (vocal music) are now the focus point of my work. And the second album in the series, called Ballader på kontrabass, will be released in 2028. 

"Slåtter på kontrabass" is currently also a R&D project at the Norwegian Academy of Music (2025-2028).

Some of the tunes are arranged for bass ensemble, and solo bass with pre-recorded accompaniment (with for example tuning forks).
