Håkon Thelin is considered one of the world's leading performers of classical contemporary music, and he has researched and invented a number of novel playing techniques on the double bass. He is a member of the ensembles Oslo Sinfonietta and POING, and regularly visits Ensemble Modern and Musikfabrik.
As a composer, Håkon creates mainly music for the double bass. He has now the largest body of double bass music by any Norwegian composer. His compositional interest is focused on folk music, microtonality, overtones, just intonation and strange sonic phenomena on the double bass.
Håkon is an assosiate professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo where he teaches double bass and contemporary music. He also teaches young bassists through courses arranged by Norsk Kontrabassklubb (Norwegian Double Bass Society), Dextra Musica and Nesodden Kulturskole.
